Lip Pencil

When it comes to lip pencils and lining our lips, we often wonder about their importance and usage. A few of us who started early with the trend understand the significance of lining our lips into a perfect shape. Tracing the outer line of the lips is not new. The trend accelerated in the late 90s and since then it has modified itself but hasn’t flown away with time.

Though lip liners look different, they one way or the other work like a lip primer only. They make your lipstick last by not letting it feather or smudge. While it might not be the hero of the game, it is supportive enough to do some serious good to your lipstick.

We all are familiar with the fact that how smudged lipstick can bring down the hours of our efforts of looking flawless. Alternatively known as lip pencils, you can use these pencils to outline the shape of your lips and clear minor imperfections. A lip pencil fills the gaps of the lips. Some women like to use lip pencils alone for some dash of pigment on their lips.

Why do I need a lip pencil?

  1. Adheres the lipstick to the lips

The most important aspect of a lip pencil is no doubt its potential to hold the lipstick to itself. The formula by which a lip pencil is created hugs on the pigment of the lipstick and enhances the true colour of it. It acts as a base that the lipstick grabs on to.

  1. Prevents smudging

The other important aspect of a lip liner is that is prevents the bleeding of the lipstick. Since it makes the lip colour hang on it, it becomes a bit difficult for it to go off the lines.

  1. Can be used for a matte look

You can use a lip liner individually to get a matte hint of colour on your lips. Just line your lips with one and fill the lips with the same colour.

  1. Gives fuller lips

Lip liners make your lips look fuller. Firstly, they add one extra layer of colour to your lips, popping and enhancing your lipstick and secondly, you can go beyond your natural lip circumference if you have thin lips to create the illusion of fuller lips.

If you are using a lip pencil to make your lips look fuller, use the shade that matches the colour of your lipstick.

How do I apply a Lip Liner?

Lining the lips is simple, doesn’t take much efforts and is not that time consuming. If you are starting the usage of a lip liner you still need some precision to get a perfectly lined pout. Read on to find out the best way to do so…

Step 1: Prep the lips

Just like any other lip product, your lip pencil too asks for hydrated and well exfoliated lips. The easiest way to do so is by applying a good amount of lip balm to your lips. Now, brush away the dead skin on the lips with the help of a damp toothbrush. Use very light, gentle, circular strokes. After this step, blot the extra lip balm with the help of a tissue paper and you are good to go.

Step 2: Choosing the correct shade

The fundamental to a flawless lip base is to use a matching shade of lip liner with your lipstick. Gone are the days of using a darker shade to line and using a lighter shade to fill in the lips. You can use softer tones for day time looks and you can use darker, more bolder shades for evenings.

Step 3: Lining the lips

Start by placing the lip pencil on your cupid’s bow, it highest point. Draw a small diagonal line from the highest point tracing the natural shade of your cupid’s bow. Now, do the same steps on the other high point of the cupid’s bow creating an ‘x’ in the center of the upper lip.

Now, start from the top of your ‘x’ and draw a line towards the inner corner of your lips. Do this on the either side. You can do this in smalls strokes and gradually, you will automatically start making the line in one swoop.

Now, move towards your lower lip, starting from the outer corner move towards the center of your lower lip. You should be able to see the shape of your lips now. For a more natural and fuller finish, smudge the lip liner a little bit towards inwards with your fingers or with the pencil itself.

Step 4: Applying the lipstick

Choose a lipstick that matches the colour of your lip liner and fill your lips with it. You can apply the lipstick over your line of lip liner and there you have them, perfectly lined lips.
